FAQ
-
Is there a contract we must sign?Yes, but all memberships are month-to-month with only 14 days notice to cancel.
-
When can my child start?New students can start at anytime, there is no set schedule for when new students can start. Classes run all year round
-
What if we go away or need to take a break?Your payments can be frozen for 1 - 3 months one time per calendar year at no charge.
-
Is there a uniform? All students wear a Gi, which can be purchased for only $60
-
Is there a family rate?We don't have a family rate
-
How often will my child test for a new belt? All students progress at their own rate, but typically lower belts will test 2 times a year. As a student reaches higher levels the rates slow down. Children are only invited to test test when they are ready. Many factors are considered when inviting a student to test. (age, belt level, class, time training, curriculum proficiency and behavior)
-
Do you promote children to black belt?We do not promote children to black belt. Historically this was unheard of but in recent decades this has become a trend with some schools and organizations. Although a child may have the technical requirements, it is impossible for a child to develop proper Kime (extended power) or a deeper understanding that is required for this level.
-
Will Senpai Eric teach all the classes?Although Senpai will teach many of the classes that your child attends, the classes may be taught by various instructors and assistant instructors that have been training for years and are prepared to take on the responsibility.
-
What equipment will my child need? When a child first starts training, they will require a Gi (uniform). This consists of a jacket, pants and white belt. Gi's should be kept clean and treated with respect. Once a child is invited to sparring, they will need a sparring gear package. The package contains boxing gloves, shin pads, head gear, and a mouth guard. Male students will also require protective groin protection.
-
Is training safe?Your child's safety and well-being are our top priority. Having taught over many years, we can proudly state we have never had a serious injury (bone break, concussion etc.) There is some contact involved with martial arts training and on a rare occasion there may be some bumps and bruises.
-
Can my child bring a friend?Absolutely! We encourage students to bring friends in to try a free trial class. The growth of our community and the friendships children make and maintain will keep them training for years to come.
-
I want my child to learn to defend themselves but am nervous about them learning dangerous techniques. Do you explain the responsibility that comes with learning Martial Arts? Our entire children's program is built on the values of nonviolent conflict resolution and anti-bullying. The physical techniques are only to be used as a last resort in a serious self-defense situation.
-
Are there competitions my child can participate in?Competitions are available to students once they have progressed to an advanced level and are invited to join the competition team. Competitions are completely optional and have no effect on a student's progression through our system.
